Good news: This period gives due attention to the environment. Most of the 2009 Ramon Magsaysay Awardees honored on Monday, Aug. 31, 2009, lead efforts for addressing environment issues. They include Atty. Antonio Oposa, the multi-awarded environment lawyer from the Philippines.
The Philippines will also host two important conferences on the environment. The 1st is the Renewable Energy & Agriculture Conference (REACCT) 2009 that will be held on Sept. 3-4, 2009 at Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila. Organized by the Congressional Commission on Science & Technology, & Engineering (COMSTE), REACCT will feature the Philippines’ research & development strategy for renewable energy competitiveness & innovation, the latest news on the Philippines’ Renewable Energy (RE) Program & the global opportunities in solar, wind, geothermal, hydro, ocean & biofuel energy technologies. It will also tackle carbon financing & other established RE technologies & support systems
The 2nd is the first International Conference on Green Industry in Asia (ICGIA) that will be held on Sept. 9-11, 2009 at the Philippine International Convention Center. This conference, which the Philippines will host through the DENR, is being organized by UNIDO, UNEP, & ESCAP. Its goal is to encourage industries to adopt eco-friendly practices towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Two ministerial roundtable sessions will focus on "Low-Carbon & Resource-Efficient Industrialization: Challenges & Opportunities" & "Policies & Strategies for Resource-Efficient & Low-Carbon Industries.” ICGIA is expected to lead to the adoption of a ministerial declaration & plan of action that will include a mechanism for the regular review of progress towards the greening of industries in Asia. The conference will also hold side events for the general public, e.g., “Business Matching” Program & “Greening of Tourism” Program. The Energy Expo 2009 & the Electech 2009 exhibition will also run in parallel with the conference.
