The passage of the Renewable Energy Act, which was authored by Senator Edgardo J. Angara, creates an innovative leverage for the Philippines to establish and enhance a domestic clean energy industry affecting other critical areas of development in science and technology. Complemented by the fact that the country’s Clean Energy Initiative is a Global Initiative, the Philippines is now poised to harness other countries’ technological and business experience, and match them with the country’s great renewable energy potential.

Global investments in renewable energy have been skyrocketing, reaching a record $100 billion in 2007. And in a span of just three years, the world doubled the clean energy it generates, reaching 240 gigawatts in 2007. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg, as this figure represents only 5 percent of the global power capacity and 3.4 percent of global power generation.
